Committee approves appropriations for property maintenance—$10,150 in fines and $100,000 for insurance payouts

The Newark City Council Finance Committee approved two appropriations related to property maintenance and insurance funds.

Committee members voted 5-0 to appropriate $10,150 in court-ordered fines collected by the property maintenance division into the division’s accounts (resolution reference: 25-64). Staff said these are fines collected from property owners for code violations and will be incorporated into the property maintenance division budget.

The committee also approved releasing $100,000 that had been collected from insurance companies and held pending property remediation and code compliance; staff emphasized these are not general fund dollars but insurance funds held in trust. When property is brought back up to code, the city releases the funds back to property owners to cover remediation costs, staff said.

Both motions were approved by committee and will be forwarded to the full council. No policy changes were made; the actions appropriate and release previously collected or held funds according to existing property-management processes.
