Fuquay Varina awards $167,789 contract for Fuquay Avenue–Raleigh Street ADA improvements

The Fuquay Varina Board of Commissioners approved a $200,000 budget amendment and awarded a $167,789.60 contract Tuesday to Brow Construction Company for ADA improvements at the Fuquay Avenue and Raleigh Street intersection.

Engineering Director Matt Poland told the board the work will reconstruct curb ramps to meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards, demolish old ramps, mill and overlay the intersection, perform grading and storm drainage repairs and add striping. Poland said bids were opened Aug. 28 and Brow Construction was the lowest responsive, responsible bidder.

The board authorized the town manager to execute the contract after town attorney form review. Poland estimated construction would start about three weeks after contract execution and that the work should take about four to five months, weather permitting; thermoplastic striping may be delayed until warmer weather. The town identified the project in a recent board authorization to advance to construction and staff brought the budget amendment (BA 26-12) and project ordinance amendment (POA 2605) for approval Tuesday.

Commissioners discussed pedestrian safety and the possibility of incorporating public art at the intersection adjacent to the Fuquay Varina Arts Center. Poland said the town can explore artist-painted crosswalks but must confirm compliance with DOT specifications and safety requirements for high-visibility markings.

A motion to approve the budget amendment and award the contract passed unanimously.
