Worthington Schools’ elementary leadership emphasized culture and Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS) as central strategies for improving student learning, Director of Elementary Education Rob Messenheimer said on the Worth the Journey podcast.
Messenheimer described ongoing work over the past several years to clarify expectations and to shape how students experience school: “So this is everything from how do we address things? How do we help kids learn when something doesn't go right? How do we make sure that we're clear with what we expect in our schools?” He identified PBIS as a key framework for that work.
District leaders said the culture work focuses on clear expectations, consistent responses to behavior, and structures that create a positive environment so students can learn. Messenheimer linked that relational approach to instructional gains: when students feel supported, “students are able to learn better.”
The podcast discussion described the principal team as collaborative and focused on balancing school-level uniqueness with districtwide consistency; leaders meet monthly to coordinate culture and practice. No disciplinary policy changes, metrics, or new funding were announced during the interview.
