The City Council on Oct. 1 approved the establishment of a public affairs division budget and the appropriation of $69,500 to support outreach activities including a quarterly print newsletter, digital advertising, software and equipment and professional development.
Jennifer Colby, the city's new Public Affairs Manager, told the council the budget will support consistent citywide messaging, expand channels for residents who are not engaged online and provide staff training and branding standards. "Our overall goal for this fiscal year will be continuing to implement engagement campaigns on major city projects, educating staff on communication standards, and evaluating these efforts for sustainability," Colby said.
Why it matters: Council members and staff said better, more consistent communications could improve participation in city programs (for example, rebate uptake) and help make project timelines and community engagement more transparent. The council approved the staff recommendation without amendment.
