Lake County commissioners hear 4‑H youth presentations; Job and Family Services to staff fair booth

Lisa Manning, a 4‑H and family and consumer sciences educator, introduced a group of Lake County 4‑H members who appeared at the Board of Commissioners meeting to describe this year’s county fair and the youth projects that will be on display.

The students outlined show schedules and auction details and invited commissioners and the public to attend. “We will start registration at 10AM, and then the auction will start at noon for small animals,” Manning said. She described the planned schedule for meals and the start time for large animals: “And then at 04:00 will be our large animals.”

The presentations included a mix of youth projects — livestock, poultry and non‑animal exhibits — and short personal remarks about skills learned in 4‑H. Olivia Steelman, Leanne Milo and others described their animals and experience; one Youth Market participant said, “I have learned that 4 H just showed me how to be patient.” Several youths invited the commissioners and public to the fair’s senior day and to view the youth building displays.

A county staff representative from Lake County Job and Family Services told the board the agency will operate a booth on the main concourse during the fair and sponsor special admission days. “We will have job and family services will have a booth on the main concourse of the fair next week as we typically do each year,” the representative said, and later noted that Thursday, July 24 is Kids Day and Friday, July 25 is Senior Day. The representative clarified age eligibility: “Kids 14 are free.”

Commissioners praised the youth presentations and encouraged attendance at the auction. Commissioner Beveridge thanked the participants and said their year‑long commitment to animal care and other projects distinguishes them from peers.

The presentations were used by commissioners to promote the fair schedule and to thank volunteers and families who support 4‑H programming. No formal action or vote resulted from the presentations; the board proceeded to its listed resolutions and departmental reports.
