250 Commission seeks permission for T-shirt contest, branding and souvenir sales; council to place items on next agenda

Roy Nijekki, chair of the Glocester 250 Commission, told the Town Council on Oct. 16 that the commission wants permission for several activities tied to upcoming 250th-anniversary events: a T-shirt contest at the middle and high schools (with a commission member offering a $100 prize), authority to sign a branding agreement with the Rhode Island 250 Commission to use the state logo, and permission to sell commemorative mementos and souvenirs as fundraisers.

Nijekki said the commission also voted to cosponsor the Pottinganset project’s grant request and wished to clarify whether the commission is authorized to sell items at events or through local merchants. The council president said the commission should place those four items on the council agenda for a formal vote; staff was directed to add them to a future agenda.

No formal council vote on the substance of the requests occurred during the Oct. 16 meeting; the council merely agreed to add them to a future agenda for consideration and formal action.
