Council hears update on water, sewer and street projects as city primes infrastructure for growth

City staff used the workshop to review several infrastructure and utility projects they say are intended to ready Mount Pleasant for future development.

Staff noted large utility investments in recent years, including water and wastewater treatment plant upgrades and replacement of aging sewer mains. A list of ongoing items included wastewater treatment improvements, the West Blue Project, Cypress Industrial Lift Station work, sewer line replacement on industrial corridors and the system‑wide rollout of new water meters (staff said the meters are about 95% installed and some remain to be fully commissioned).

Staff also described smaller capital efforts such as fire station roof replacement, airport hangar expansion initiatives, and street resurfacing. The facilitator pointed to First Street as an example of a single project that can consume significant capital dollars and said pavement management and curbs will require continued attention. Staff described two recently obtained generator grants for water treatment facilities to ensure redundancy during outages.

The facilitator asked the council to consider infrastructure as a core strategic priority because it supports future tax base growth and development.
