City Plans to End Red Speed Camera Contract at St. Pius School Zone

City staff told the council on Oct. 16 that the city’s lone RedSpeed automated speed camera, at a St. Pius school zone, has reduced violations to the point that the program is no longer financially effective and that pending changes in state law could further limit the program’s utility.

Staff said citations have fallen markedly and that the city’s cost‑share with RedSpeed (roughly 30% to the vendor) made the program a net cost for the city. Saint Pius School officials support removing the device, staff said. The recommendation is to terminate the contract and provide the contractually required 30‑day notice.

Council members recalled community pushback when the camera system was first installed and raised the prospect that the city will continue traditional traffic enforcement through patrol units and the city’s neighborhood response unit.

Staff did not seek immediate formal action at the work session; termination would be processed through the contract’s notice procedures and presented for formal action on the agenda as necessary, staff said.
