Council waives planning commission review for HEDA purchase of 507 East Howard Street

The Hibbing City Council voted Oct. 1 to waive the planning commission review for a proposed purchase of 507 East Howard Street by HEDA, the agency moving to acquire the former Abel Chiropractic building.

"Within your packet is a proposed resolution for the council to pass considering waiving the planning commission review of HEDA purchasing real property at 507 East Howard Street," City Attorney Andy Borland told the council, describing the building as dilapidated and noting a possible plan to demolish the structure once HEDA takes control.

Borland said the purchase is between Saint Louis County and HEDA and that timing and the city's plans were factors in seeking the waiver. "Just because of the timing as we move forward, and because the city has a pretty good idea what they're gonna do with it, that's why we're asking to waive that this evening," Borland said.

Councilor Whitney moved to approve the resolution; Councilor Hildebrand seconded. The council adopted the resolution by voice vote.

City staff said they had worked with HEDA and county staff on the transaction and will return with any follow-up details as the property transfer and potential demolition proceed.
