All fifth graders attend STARBASE: board hears program update and student reactions

At the meeting, instructional staff provided an update on STARBASE, a Department of Defense‑sponsored STEM enrichment program held at Fort Pickett. The board was told that every fifth‑grade class from Prince Edward County participates (two classes attend one day per week over six weeks) and that teachers attend with students to support classroom follow‑up.

Instructional staff (Miss Garrett) showed a short student interview video and described daily program activities: students complete four experiments per day, work on design challenges (for example, building a protective ‘harness’ for an egg carried on a 3‑D‑printed plane), and use budget constraints in projects to integrate math concepts. Garrett said teachers return with ideas and items the district can purchase to replicate hands‑on experiences in local classrooms. She credited strong division support for transportation, meals and scheduling that allowed all fifth graders to participate.

Board members praised the program’s reach and student engagement. Garrett said participation is high and that students who miss a session routinely express disappointment. The board did not take formal action; the item was presented as an informational update.
