Barnstable committee begins review of district homework policy; second read planned after subcommittee edits

The Barnstable Public Schools committee conducted a first reading Tuesday of a proposed district homework policy designed to set consistent, level‑appropriate guidelines across the district.

The draft emphasizes that homework takes many forms—study, project work, practice, or community‑connected tasks—and is intended to help students gradually develop independent learning skills. Chair Peter and other members stressed the policy is intended as a framework and that classroom teachers will retain discretion over assignments.

Superintendent Sarah said the policy was revised after broad district feedback and that additional suggestions received since posting will be routed to the policy subcommittee; the committee plans further edits before a second read in August. Member Andre and others urged that the policy explicitly address supports for students who struggle and that the district connect homework practices to measurable achievement goals such as MCAS and readiness benchmarks.

Committee members noted the need for a gradual, developmental approach so students entering intermediate and high school have prior exposure to consistent homework expectations. No vote was taken; the policy will return to the subcommittee for clarifying edits and community input.
