Board names City Garden the June Wheeler Hummingbird Garden; $10,000 donation authorized

The Southaven Board of Aldermen unanimously approved a resolution naming the City Garden adjacent to the City Field of Dreams the "June Wheeler Hummingbird Garden." The resolution, read by the mayor, cited Mississippi Code 21-17-5 as authority for the governing body’s control of city property and described Wheeler’s contributions as a master gardener and her fondness for hummingbirds.

Alderman Wheeler (whose mother is the honoree) moved for the resolution and the board seconded and approved it. The board also later authorized acceptance of a $10,000 donation from the Maddox Foundation to support the hummingbird garden as part of the city attorney’s update.

The mayor said staff will determine an appropriate location and sign and will solicit input for design and placement. The city attorney presented the donation authorization and the board voted to accept the gift.

The garden dedication celebrates a locally noted master gardener and will be developed with city oversight and donor support.
