Smith High School to undergo phased second‑floor renovation; district expects completion in 2027

District construction staff presented details Oct. 2 about a planned major renovation at Smith High School that will include comprehensive work on the second floor, restroom and cafeteria updates, gym refreshes, ADA site improvements and security upgrades.

Scope and phasing
Corey Blackburn, executive officer of construction, said the project will “basically” gut and fully renovate classrooms on the second floor and refresh key public areas. Work will proceed in phases using an eight‑classroom “hopscotch” approach so the campus will remain operational without adding portable classrooms.

Timing and impact
Blackburn said the district would like to begin mobilization after the Christmas break if schedules allow, and he estimated completion in 2027. He told trustees the plan avoids portables by renovating about eight classrooms at a time. A trustee asked whether the work would start in 2026; Blackburn confirmed the plan was to start after the upcoming Christmas break this year. Blackburn said restrooms, the cafeteria and gym will be refreshed and ADA/site and security improvements included.

Board action
The construction amendment that would authorize work with Crossland Construction was included in the consent agenda and therefore approved as part of the board’s Oct. 2 consent vote (motion by Marjorie Barnes; second by Randy Schackman; vote 6–0).

Ending
District staff said they will provide updates to the board and the bond oversight committee as the project progresses; no additional site relocations are anticipated because work will be phased to keep students on campus.
