Yellowstone County Proposes Paving Gravel Road Benefiting 22 Property Owners

Residents of Yellowstone County are poised to see significant improvements to a gravel road currently maintained by the county, following a recent meeting on May 16, 2023. The proposal involves paving approximately 1,300 feet of road from Nye Bauer, which serves 22 properties in the area.

The estimated cost for the paving project is around $135,000, with the county agreeing to contribute $31,000 through a cost-sharing initiative. This will reduce the financial burden on the affected property owners, who will collectively pay about $103,000, translating to approximately $4,700 per parcel. Property owners will have the option to finance their share over seven years at a 6% interest rate, resulting in an annual payment of about $8.50. Alternatively, they can pay upfront to save on interest costs.

A public hearing was held to gauge community support for the project, with the commission set to determine whether to create a Road Special Assessment District (RSAD) based on the feedback received. So far, five written protests have been submitted, with one protest representing two parcels.

If the district is approved, the design phase is expected to be completed by mid-June, with bidding and awarding of contracts by late July. Construction is slated to begin in August, marking a significant step toward enhancing local infrastructure and accessibility for residents. The commission emphasized the importance of this project, as it represents the only access route for the affected parcels.

As the process moves forward, the commission will continue to engage with the community to ensure transparency and address any concerns regarding the paving initiative.
