Goodwill Environmental School Celebrates 25 Years of Immersive Education for Fifth Graders

During the Regular Board of Education Meeting held on September 18, 2023, the Forest Hills Board of Education highlighted significant educational initiatives and celebrated student achievements, emphasizing the district's commitment to fostering a rich learning environment.

One of the key discussions centered around the Goodwill Environmental School's immersive sixth-grade camp experience, which marks its 25th year. Principal Jason Yielding, along with sixth-grade teachers Beth Donyet and Scott Morehead, presented the camp as a cornerstone of the students' two-year educational journey. The camp, set in the scenic backdrop of the Pere Marquette River and Nordhouse Dunes, allows students to engage with essential environmental standards, such as human impact on ecosystems and weather patterns. Yielding shared anecdotes from past camps, including a memorable encounter with wildlife, illustrating the unique learning opportunities provided by the program.

Former students Lila Pavlovich and Timothy also spoke about their recent camp experiences, highlighting the challenges and joys of activities like canoeing and journaling under the stars. Their reflections underscored the lasting impact of the camp on their personal growth and friendships, reinforcing the program's value in shaping students' educational journeys.

The meeting also recognized outstanding achievements in athletics, with Athletic Director Jonathan Goe presenting awards to state champions from Forest Hills Central. Notable mentions included Lily Olmeg, who won the state championship in tennis, and Brooke Bowers, a state champion in pole vaulting. Goe emphasized the importance of academic success alongside athletic achievements, noting that the boys' lacrosse team achieved an impressive GPA of 3.954, earning them the title of Academic All State.

In addition to celebrating student accomplishments, the meeting addressed upcoming ballot proposals for the community. Assistant Superintendent for Finance Judy Angus outlined two proposals set for the November 7 election, aimed at enhancing the district's educational resources and infrastructure.
