Sydney Kuipers wins first place in Michigan state art contest

The Forest Hills Board of Education celebrated remarkable achievements in student creativity during their recent meeting on February 20, 2023. The highlight of the evening was a showcase of student writing and art, demonstrating the district's commitment to fostering talent at all educational levels.

Four students presented their writing, impressing board members and attendees with their clarity and creativity. Their work, developed through a workshop model that emphasizes choice and personal expression, showcased significant growth from their earlier grades. Board members expressed pride in the students' accomplishments, noting the impressive organization and detail in their writing.

In a delightful surprise, art teacher Sarah Bridal introduced fourth graders who had created portraits of the new board members as part of their art curriculum. This initiative not only highlighted the students' artistic skills but also reinforced the integration of choice in the learning process, similar to the writing workshop.

The meeting also recognized Sydney Kuipers, a high school student who won first place in the Michigan Art Contest. Sydney's artwork, themed around what makes Michigan strong, was praised for its creativity and representation of state landmarks.
