Cascade Township Parent Advocates for Consistent School Bus Safety Measures

During the recent Forest Hills Board of Education meeting held on February 20, 2023, community members raised significant concerns regarding student transportation and safety, as well as curriculum content in local schools.

One parent expressed gratitude for the reinstatement of regular busing, which has alleviated the need for parents to drive their children to school. However, they highlighted a pressing issue: the lack of transportation for middle school sporting events. This absence has left the district seemingly isolated compared to others that provide such services, prompting calls for action to address this gap.

Safety concerns took center stage as another parent detailed alarming observations regarding bus stops on Cascade Road. They reported that many drivers ignore the flashing red lights and stop signs when buses are picking up or dropping off students. The inconsistency in how bus drivers manage stops—sometimes only using hazard lights instead of the full stop signal—has led to dangerous situations. The parent recounted a recent incident where a student was instructed to run to avoid an oncoming vehicle that failed to stop. Additionally, Jennifer Feuerstein, a parent of children in Forest Hills Eastern, addressed the board regarding past discussions about curriculum materials. She reminded board members of a previous meeting in January 2020, where concerns were raised about a book assigned to her daughter, which had sparked controversy among parents.
