DLAC Calls for Comprehensive Mental Health Support for Students Post-Pandemic

During a recent government meeting, significant concerns were raised regarding the mental health of children in San Francisco, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Parents and educators highlighted the emotional toll that social isolation and fear of the virus have taken on students, especially those attending Gordon J. Lau Elementary School.

One parent shared their experience, noting that their children, one in pre-kindergarten and the other in third grade, have struggled with the impacts of the pandemic. The parent emphasized the need for a safe environment where children can express their feelings and begin to resocialize as schools reopen. They called for comprehensive school-based mental health services to support students dealing with trauma, grief, and the challenges heightened by the pandemic.

The recommendations put forth included the development of culturally and linguistically appropriate mental health services, trauma-informed care, and the establishment of partnerships with families and community organizations. These initiatives aim to create a supportive network for students and their families, ensuring that mental health needs are addressed effectively.

Carmen Rodriguez, an elected representative of the District Local Advisory Committee (DLAC), echoed these sentiments, stressing the importance of collaboration between families and mental health service providers.
