In a recent meeting at San Francisco City Hall, officials discussed significant changes to student assessments in light of new federal guidelines. The California Department of Education announced on April 7 that the U.S. Department of Education has granted the state relief from certain federal testing requirements. This decision has a direct impact on the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD), which has determined that administering the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CASP) is not feasible for the 2021 school year.
As a result, SFUSD will not conduct several key assessments, including the Smarter Balanced Assessments for English language arts and math, as well as the California alternative assessments for these subjects and the California science test. However, the English Language Proficiency Assessment (ELPAC) will continue as planned, running through July 30.
The decision to forgo these assessments was based on specific local conditions that made testing impractical. Officials cited various factors in their resolution, emphasizing the need to prioritize student well-being and adapt to the ongoing challenges posed by the pandemic.
This shift in assessment strategy reflects a broader trend in education, where flexibility and responsiveness to local circumstances are becoming increasingly important. As SFUSD navigates these changes, the focus remains on ensuring that students receive the support they need during these unprecedented times.
