Senate Passes Senate Bill 7 Appropriating $171M for Veterans and National Guard

Senate Bill 7, which focuses on the budget for the Utah National Guard and Veterans Affairs, made significant strides during the recent government meeting. The bill, which appropriates a total of $171 million, received unanimous support after a motion to encircle it was passed, allowing for further discussion and amendments.

Senator Stevenson introduced an amendment to refine the intent language regarding performance measures for the legislative auditor. This amendment was also approved without opposition, showcasing a collaborative effort among lawmakers to enhance the bill's clarity and effectiveness.

The bill allocates $51 million from the general fund for the operating budgets of four key agencies: Capitol Preservation, Utah National Guard, Veterans Military Affairs, and the legislature itself. Additionally, it includes $12 million for the firefighters' retirement trust and agency fund. Notably, $100 million of the total funding comes from federal sources, primarily benefiting the Utah National Guard and state veterans nursing homes, which will receive $41 million.

While the bill does not include the previously approved $25 million for replacing the Salt Lake City veterans nursing home, this funding is part of the capital budget under Senate Bill 6.

As the meeting progressed, the Senate moved swiftly to advance Senate Bill 7, with a motion to read it for a second and third time under suspension of the rules. The bill's passage is anticipated, reflecting a strong commitment to supporting Utah's veterans and military personnel.
