County Council Discusses FY24 Budget and Jail Improvement Plans

Cumberland County officials are preparing for significant budgetary changes as they navigate the complexities of fiscal planning for the upcoming year. During the finance meeting held on September 21, 2022, it was confirmed that the county's budget for the first half of the fiscal year, which began on July 1, 2022, has already been approved. This budget includes a notable allocation for the county jail, which is facing staffing shortages that have hindered federal support.

The county anticipates a total tax need of just under $2.1 million, reflecting a 5.91% increase. This includes nearly $600,000 earmarked for the jail and approximately $150,000 for the Cross Insurance Arena. The arena's operational costs are projected to rise by nearly $86,000, attributed to increased activity and expenses as it recovers from pandemic-related downturns. In addition to operational budgets, the meeting highlighted a proposed $3.8 million capital bond aimed at addressing critical infrastructure needs, including a $1.7 million roof replacement for the jail and $1.2 million for a new lock system to enhance security. These upgrades are essential as the county plans to expand the jail with a new medical wing funded through federal resources.
