Utah County Farm Bureau honors Dean Minor for 30 years of agricultural education

Utah County's commitment to agricultural education received a significant boost during the recent county commission meeting, where community leaders expressed gratitude for the ongoing efforts to connect children and families with their agricultural heritage. Chris Riley, vice president of the Utah County Farm Bureau, highlighted the importance of educating youth about where their food comes from, emphasizing the positive impact of programs like Farm Field Days.

Riley noted that participation in these educational initiatives has dramatically increased understanding among students, particularly those from urban backgrounds. He shared that some inner-city schools have seen comprehension levels rise from 20% to 80%, providing children who may not have had prior exposure to farming with invaluable experiences.

The meeting also recognized Dean Minor, a retired educator from Utah State University Extension, for his three decades of dedication to agricultural education. His contributions, along with those of Belva Parr and other volunteers, were acknowledged for their tireless efforts in organizing events that engage students with hands-on learning about farming and livestock.

Riley expressed appreciation for local farms, such as Harvard Farms in Springville, which have supported these educational efforts through their resources and labor. He underscored the sacrifices made by farmers, especially during challenging weather conditions, to ensure that these programs continue to thrive.
