Utah County Commission approves mining operation expansion and new project coordinator position

Utah County officials have taken significant steps to enhance public health surveillance and streamline operations during their recent commission meeting on July 21, 2021. The commission unanimously approved a motion to bolster disease tracking efforts, which have proven essential in managing public health crises, such as the hepatitis A outbreak experienced in the county two years ago. This initiative emphasizes the importance of monitoring health trends without infringing on individual privacy, focusing instead on aggregate data to identify and mitigate potential outbreaks.

In addition to health surveillance, the commission authorized an amendment to an existing agreement with EKR, adjusting the timeline for advertising services at a cost of $12,550. This amendment, which was previously approved, simply updates the dates for when the ads will go live, ensuring that the county's communication efforts remain timely and effective.

Another key decision involved the approval of a compliance agreement for an open pit mining operation with CMC Rock, Westlake Material LLC. This operation, which has been active since 2015, is expanding its footprint by an additional 100 acres. Officials noted that the nearest residential area is approximately three miles away, alleviating concerns about increased traffic or environmental impact. The commission confirmed that all necessary inspections and approvals had been completed, allowing the expansion to proceed smoothly.

Lastly, the commission appointed a project coordinator position funded through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) grant. This temporary role, expected to last up to three years, aims to enhance the county's operational efficiency in managing various projects. The decision reflects ongoing efforts to adapt to staffing needs in response to the challenges posed by the pandemic.
