Camp Floyd State Park manager Clay Shelley reports visitor increase and new programs

The Utah County Commission meeting on February 23, 2022, featured an annual update from Clay Shelley, the park manager at Camp Floyd State Park. The discussion highlighted the park's recovery from the impacts of COVID-19 and its plans for future programming and improvements.

Shelley reported a significant increase in visitation, with 6,043 visitors recorded from July 2020 to June 2021, a number that had dropped due to pandemic restrictions. However, in the first few months of the current year, the park has already welcomed 54 visitors, indicating a positive trend as programs resume. He noted that school group visits, which had been limited last year, are expected to increase, with two days in April already booked and May fully scheduled.

The park successfully hosted five events last year, including a cowboy poetry gathering and military appreciation day, which attracted record attendance. Shelley expressed optimism about upcoming events, including a summer concert series and additional interpretive programs, which are set to double this year.

Improvements at Camp Floyd include the installation of a new restroom facility and an outdoor kitchen, which will support new programming such as pioneer cooking classes. Shelley also mentioned the addition of an ice machine to assist campers in the area, addressing a local need for ice supplies.

Looking ahead, the park is undergoing renovations, including the construction of a new restroom building, which is currently in progress. The meeting underscored the park's commitment to enhancing visitor experiences and expanding its offerings as it continues to recover from the pandemic's effects.
