West Mountain officials propose target shooting closure to enhance public safety

In a recent meeting held at the Utah County Commission, officials gathered to address a pressing issue that has been affecting residents near West Mountain: the dangers associated with target shooting in the area. Over the years, numerous incidents have been reported where stray bullets have struck homes and outbuildings, raising serious safety concerns. Additionally, target shooting has been linked to several wildfires, prompting the commission to take action.

The discussion highlighted a particularly alarming incident earlier this year when a bullet nearly hit a resident in their outbuilding. This event served as a wake-up call for local authorities, leading them to engage with various stakeholders, including representatives from nearby towns like Santaquin, Genola, and Payson, to devise a solution.

To mitigate the risks, the commission proposed a closure of certain target shooting areas, specifically targeting 1,369 acres of land managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration (SITLA). This proposal aims to enhance safety for residents while still considering the needs of the shooting community.

In response to concerns about where shooters might relocate, officials presented alternatives. One option is the North End of West Mountain, which is already a popular shooting spot and has seen improvements like the installation of safety berms. Another promising development is a proposed state-of-the-art shooting range by the Citizen Marksmanship Program on the South End of West Mountain. This facility would offer various shooting options and is currently undergoing environmental assessments.

Additionally, the commission pointed out existing developed ranges, such as the Thistle range near Spanish Fork Canyon and the Soldier Pass range in the Lake Mountains, as viable alternatives for shooters. These established sites already have the necessary infrastructure to accommodate shooting activities safely.

As the meeting concluded, officials expressed a commitment to balancing safety with recreational opportunities, emphasizing the importance of responsible shooting practices. The discussions reflect a growing awareness of the need to protect both residents and the environment while still catering to the interests of the shooting community.
