Lake Restoration Solutions presents Utah Lake revitalization plans to commissioners

Utah County is taking significant steps toward restoring Utah Lake, a vital natural resource that has faced severe ecological challenges. During a recent government meeting, Lake Restoration Solutions presented an update on their ambitious restoration project, which aims to revitalize the lake's health and usability.

John Benson, President of Lake Restoration Solutions, introduced a team of experts from Geosyntech Consultants, who bring decades of experience in environmental restoration. The team includes specialists in marine ecology, environmental engineering, and water quality modeling, all of whom are crucial to the project's success.

The Utah Lake Restoration Project was initiated following the passage of House Bill 272 in 2018, which set forth objectives for improving water clarity, quality, and overall ecosystem health. The project aims to address the lake's declining conditions, which have been exacerbated by human activities, including the introduction of invasive species and nutrient pollution from treated wastewater.

Benson highlighted the alarming state of Utah Lake, where harmful algal blooms have become a yearly occurrence, deterring recreational use. Central to this plan is dredging, which will remove contaminated sediments and restore native habitats.

The project also includes the creation of dredged containment islands, which will help sequester harmful sediments and support the restoration of the lake's ecosystem.
