New Milford Council hosts vision derby and plans domestic violence symposium

In a recent meeting of the New Milford Board of Education, community leaders highlighted the spirit of unity and resilience that has emerged in the wake of Hurricane Ida. Council President Penny Grant opened the session by reflecting on the successful Vision Derby organized by the Indian School Alliance, which brought residents together for a day of fun and relaxation. She emphasized the importance of community events in fostering connections among residents.

The meeting also addressed ongoing recovery efforts from the hurricane, with Grant praising local volunteers for their tireless work in organizing collections of clothing, toys, and supplies at the New Milford Elk Lodge. She specifically acknowledged the leadership of Emily Tataro, Maria Demler, and Danielle Laporta, who have been instrumental in coordinating these efforts. Additionally, residents in need of cleaning supplies were encouraged to visit the Department of Public Works (DPW) to pick up kits.

FEMA's involvement was another key topic, as a mobile unit recently visited the area to assist residents in applying for financial aid. Grant reassured the community that FEMA remains available for those seeking assistance, emphasizing the ongoing nature of recovery efforts.

Looking ahead, the meeting introduced the Cereal Box Challenge, an initiative encouraging schools to donate healthier food options while raising awareness about food insecurity. This challenge is part of the broader Bergen County Food Security Task Force, showcasing the collaborative efforts to address local needs.

The meeting also touched on the upcoming Domestic Violence Symposium, scheduled for October 27 at New Milford High School. Grant, along with representatives from the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office, discussed the symposium's focus on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on domestic violence. The event aims to raise awareness about identifying individuals in abusive relationships and addressing the mental health aspects associated with such situations.

As the meeting concluded, the sense of community and partnership was palpable, with leaders expressing gratitude for the collaboration between the borough and the school district. The discussions underscored a commitment to supporting residents and fostering a safe, connected environment for all.
