Radford University expands Tuition Promise and community college transfer program for affordability

Radford University is making significant strides in affordability and accessibility for its students, as highlighted during the Board of Visitors meeting on December 6, 2024. A key focus of the meeting was the success of the Radford Tuition Promise, which has proven to be a transformative initiative for the university. This program aims to provide affordable education pathways for students, particularly those from low to middle-income families.

Since its launch, the Radford Tuition Promise has reached 7,812 students, including 6,161 undergraduates and 1,651 graduate students. This marks the first enrollment growth for the university since 2019, with 45% of new freshmen and 33% of returning students qualifying for the program. The initiative has not only increased enrollment but also improved student retention rates, demonstrating its effectiveness in supporting students financially.

In addition to the Tuition Promise, the university has also raised the minimum wage for on-campus jobs to $15 an hour, allowing students to earn more while working fewer hours. This change is aimed at further alleviating financial burdens and making education more affordable.

Another significant development is the establishment of the Tartan Transfer Program, which partners with eight local community colleges. This program allows students to transfer seamlessly to Radford without incurring tuition costs, enabling them to earn both an associate's and a bachelor's degree debt-free. This collaborative effort is expected to enhance educational opportunities for Virginians and strengthen the university's ties with local institutions.
