Commonwealth assesses readiness for future tech in transportation infrastructure program

The Northern Virginia Transportation Authority convened a Transportation Technology Committee meeting on April 13, 2022, to discuss advancements in transportation technology and the ongoing readiness project initiated in 2021. While some areas are advancing towards level 3, the committee acknowledged that many industry best practices do not yet encompass emerging technologies.

Following the assessment, the committee shifted focus to the selection of use cases for technology implementation. A total of 80 potential use cases were considered, ultimately narrowing down to 15 that align with current technological capabilities and existing investments. These use cases span various categories, including driver mobility, safety, freight, traffic planning, and weather-related events.

The meeting concluded with a discussion on proposed investments, with 24 specific initiatives identified to enhance the authority's technological infrastructure. The committee plans to share a detailed use case report and continue refining strategies for integrating new technologies into the transportation system.
