Angela Sanders announces new cosmetology and barber service requirements for establishments

Barbers and cosmetologists in Texas will soon benefit from significant regulatory changes aimed at streamlining operations within their establishments. During the Barber and Cosmetology Summit held on November 14, 2022, key updates were announced that will take effect on January 1, 2023.

Angela Sanders, a cosmetology program specialist, highlighted that barbershops and cosmetology salons will no longer need separate licenses to offer both services. This means that a single establishment license will suffice for businesses wishing to provide a mix of barbering and cosmetology services. Business owners can choose to maintain their current operations or expand their offerings without the burden of additional licensing requirements.

The new regulations allow for a wide range of services under one license, including haircuts, coloring, manicures, pedicures, and aesthetics. However, specific tasks remain restricted; for instance, only licensed barbers may perform shaves with a straight razor, while eyelash extensions are exclusively offered by cosmetologists.

In addition to licensing changes, all establishments will be required to post updated sanitation rules, a requirement that previously applied only to barbershops. This aims to enhance hygiene standards across the board. Establishments can either display the new sanitation rules or keep a current law and rule book available for reference.

The Texas Licensing team is also working on releasing a new law and rule book by fall 2023, which will be distributed to licensees upon renewal. This initiative reflects a commitment to keeping industry professionals informed and compliant with the latest regulations.

These changes are expected to simplify operations for business owners and enhance service offerings for clients, ultimately fostering a more integrated approach to barbering and cosmetology in Texas.
