New cosmetology regulations allow digital license displays and expanded barber services

The Texas Barber and Cosmetology Summit kicked off with significant updates that will reshape the industry landscape starting January 2023. A key highlight was the shift in terminology from "shops" and "salons" to "establishments," reflecting a new regulatory framework that allows for a broader range of services under one roof.

Sean O'Neil, a seasoned professional with 38 years of experience, emphasized the importance of these changes, particularly the introduction of new options for displaying individual licenses. Under the new statute, licensees can now showcase their credentials either physically near their workstation or digitally on devices like computers and tablets. This move aims to streamline inspections and enhance transparency in the industry.

Another major update is the expanded scope of practice for barbers. Effective January 1, 2023, barbers will be permitted to offer body waxing services, allowing them to remove hair from areas beyond the neck. This change not only broadens the services barbers can provide but also opens new revenue streams for their businesses.

Additionally, all barbershops and cosmetology salons will transition to a new "Barbering Cosmetology Full Service Establishment License" by September 1, 2023. This transition is crucial for compliance with the updated regulations, and industry professionals are advised to prepare for the changes ahead.
