Hunters Point Shipyard plans outdoor entertainment to showcase local artists

The San Francisco City Council meeting on July 4, 2025, focused on the approval of a permit for outdoor entertainment at the Hunters Point Shipyard, home to approximately 300 artists. The proposal aims to activate the outdoor private lot with live music and other entertainment during events that showcase the artists' work.

Barbara Achel, the director of the artist community at the shipyard, presented the plan, highlighting that the area has no nearby residential neighbors, which allows for amplified sound without disturbing residents. The San Francisco Police Department's Bayview Station has already approved the permit, contingent on adherence to municipal police codes regarding indoor and outdoor entertainment.

Achel emphasized the importance of community outreach, noting that the organization had posted the permit details on Townsquare, an online platform, and sent newsletters to local artists. There was no opposition to the permit, indicating strong support from the community.

The Hunters Point Shipyard, located at the southeast end of San Francisco, is surrounded by water on three sides and is primarily an artist hub. Achel mentioned that the area has hosted open studio events twice a year, and a new gallery has recently opened following renovations. The outdoor space is intended to enhance these events by providing a lively atmosphere with food service and music, attracting more visitors and promoting the artists' work.
