Bayview Commission approves Waymo's employee parking garage at 301 Tolland Street

A significant development in San Francisco's Bayview neighborhood was approved during a recent city commission meeting, allowing Waymo to convert part of an industrial building into a private parking garage. The conditional use authorization will transform approximately 20% of the 108,000 square-foot facility at 301 Tolland Street into a secure parking area, providing 46 spaces for employees of Waymo's automotive maintenance site located across the street.

The proposal, presented by Laura Aiello from the planning department, aims to address the parking shortage faced by Waymo's 300 employees, who currently rely on limited street parking. The project will include interior modifications for employee amenities such as a break room and restrooms, while the exterior will see minimal changes, primarily converting one loading dock into a vehicle entry.

The Bayview Hunters Point Citizens Advisory Committee reviewed the project and recommended approval, contingent upon Waymo providing periodic updates to the committee. Despite the lack of public opposition, concerns were raised during the meeting regarding the potential implications of Waymo's parcel delivery operations, which are currently under a moratorium by the Board of Supervisors. However, city officials clarified that the approval strictly pertains to employee parking and does not authorize any parcel delivery activities.

The commission unanimously approved the conditional use authorization, emphasizing that the decision is based on land use rather than the specific business operations of Waymo. This development is expected to enhance employee access and safety, particularly for those working overnight shifts, while utilizing a currently vacant industrial space.
