Community advocates urge Department of Public Health to implement 30% rent policy

During a recent San Francisco government meeting, community members voiced urgent concerns regarding housing affordability, particularly for those living in supportive housing under the Department of Public Health (DPH). The public comment segment highlighted the struggles of tenants who are paying up to 80% of their income in rent, far exceeding the recommended limit of 30%.

Jordan Davis, founder of the 30 Right Now Coalition, emphasized the need for DPH to implement the 30% rent standard, which was successfully adopted by the Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing. Davis pointed out that many vulnerable residents, including the elderly and those with mental health challenges, are disproportionately affected by high rental costs. She called for increased funding and transparency within the DPH to ensure that no tenant is burdened with excessive rent.

Other speakers echoed these sentiments, sharing personal stories of hardship. Nourit, a mother of a son with a mental disability, expressed frustration over the lack of change in rental policies, questioning why DPH has not aligned with federal guidelines that advocate for affordable housing. Richard Gerling, a long-time San Francisco resident, and Lux Fassin, another advocate, both reinforced the call for DPH to adopt the 30% rent standard, highlighting the strong public support for this initiative.
