San Francisco officials discuss challenges and successes in LGBTQ housing initiatives

The San Francisco County government meeting on July 4, 2025, focused on the progress and challenges of programs aimed at supporting the LGBTQ community, particularly transgender and non-binary individuals. Stratton emphasized the importance of cultural competency training for property managers and housing counselors to better serve LGBTQ individuals. The department is actively working to enhance outreach efforts to ensure that underserved communities are aware of available resources. This includes ongoing training for staff on how to collect sensitive data respectfully and effectively, which is crucial for understanding the needs of the community.

Wally Abrazaldo, from the Department of Children, Youth, and Their Families (DCYF), presented data on sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) from funded programs. He noted a drop in participation rates among transitional age youth, attributing this decline to the impacts of the pandemic. Despite these challenges, the department has made strides in collecting SOGI data and is committed to improving outreach and support for LGBTQ youth.

The meeting concluded with a recognition of the ongoing need for training and support for grantees, particularly in light of staff turnover and the evolving landscape of service delivery due to the pandemic. The commitment to enhancing services for the LGBTQ community remains a priority for San Francisco County, with plans to direct more resources towards these efforts in the future.
