Commissioner Chao updates on Laguna Honda Hospital recertification progress

San Francisco's Laguna Honda Hospital is on track for recertification into the Medicare program following significant improvements in operations and leadership, as reported during a recent joint conference committee meeting. Commissioner Chao provided an update on the hospital's progress, highlighting that Laguna Honda received positive evaluations from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) regarding health monitoring and fire safety.

The hospital received a $25.67 score for its health monitoring efforts and similar documentation for fire life safety, indicating a reduction in the scope and severity of previous findings. Plans for correcting identified issues were submitted to the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), which must approve them before CMS can make a final determination on recertification.

Commissioner Chao emphasized the importance of sustaining these improvements to ensure high-quality, regulatory-compliant care for all residents. Laguna Honda will only resume admissions once leadership is confident that the changes are long-lasting, with a gradual approach expected when operations restart.
