Planning Department supports cannabis retail project after community outreach efforts

A proposed cannabis retail project in San Francisco is generating significant community interest, as evidenced by a recent government meeting. The project sponsor, who is also an equity applicant, conducted outreach in compliance with the Office of Cannabis Good Neighbor Policy. This included notifying property owners and occupants within 300 feet of the site and holding outreach meetings on February 22, October 18, and December 7 of 2022.

The department has received a mixed response, with 18 letters supporting the project and 8 opposing it. Notably, the project sponsor collected 136 signatures on a petition in favor, while an opposing petition garnered 1,247 signatures. Concerns raised by opponents include issues related to crime, parking, safety for children, and the compatibility of the cannabis retail space with the neighborhood.

Despite the opposition, planning staff expressed support for the project, recommending approval with conditions. They highlighted that the project aligns with the city’s general plan and meets the necessary requirements of the planning code. An updated plan set, including specific floor plans and section drawings, has been requested to clarify the relationship between the existing restaurant and the proposed cannabis retail space.
