San Francisco Budget Committee reallocates $3.5M for Lunar New Year and business relief

The San Francisco Budget and Finance Committee meeting on February 14 highlighted a significant financial decision aimed at supporting local businesses impacted by recent disruptions. The committee, chaired by Supervisor Connie Chan, discussed an ordinance to reallocate $3.5 million from the general city fund. This funding will provide crucial support for various initiatives, including free two-hour parking in Portsmouth Square garages and a relief fund for businesses in the South of Market (SoMa) area affected by the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) impacts.

Supervisor Matt Dorsey praised the outreach efforts between the Office of Economic and Workforce Development and the Office of Small Business, emphasizing the positive relationships built during this challenging period. He noted that many residents and businesses have expressed appreciation for the city’s support, which he believes will yield long-term benefits.

Additionally, Supervisor Joan Gardio raised concerns about the ongoing struggles of merchants on Taraval Street, who have faced sales declines of up to 70% due to construction disruptions. She advocated for allocating $1 million from the leftover APEC funds to assist these businesses, reinforcing the committee's commitment to supporting the local economy.

The committee's decisions are expected to be presented to the Board of Supervisors on February 27, marking a proactive step towards economic recovery and community support in San Francisco.
