Commissioners approve Domino's storefront takeover at 728 Geary Street

The San Francisco Planning Commission has unanimously approved a proposal for a new Domino's Pizza location at 728 Geary Street, revitalizing a storefront that has been vacant since Pizza Hut closed in September 2020. The decision, made during a recent meeting, is expected to enhance local foot traffic and improve safety in the area, which currently has a high number of vacant storefronts.

Chloe Angeles, representing the project sponsor, emphasized that the new Domino's will not only replace the previous pizza establishment but will also cater primarily to pedestrians and delivery customers. The store will feature an expanded front entry and a designated takeout waiting area, while maintaining the building's exterior appearance aside from updated signage. The project will also provide seven parking spaces for employees, conveniently located near a busy bus stop.

The proposal received strong community support, with 19 letters backing the initiative and no opposition noted during the public comment period. Supporters highlighted the potential for increased foot traffic to enhance safety in the neighborhood, which has seen 15 vacancies within a 300-foot radius.

Commissioners expressed their approval, with Commissioner Popel motioning for the project’s approval, which was seconded and passed unanimously with a 7-0 vote. This decision marks a significant step towards activating a long-empty storefront and addressing local economic needs. The commission's swift action reflects a commitment to fostering business development and community engagement in San Francisco.
