Laguna Honda prepares for Medicare certification survey amid resident discharges

The Laguna Honda facility in San Francisco is on the brink of a crucial Medicare recertification survey, following significant progress in its compliance efforts. The facility received its Medicaid recertification in July and has since been preparing for the Medicare survey, which is expected to occur imminently. As of now, Laguna Honda has discharged 15 residents who no longer require skilled nursing care, with an additional 10 residents on a priority list for imminent discharge. However, concerns were raised during the meeting about the total number of residents identified for discharge, with some community members questioning whether all individuals who no longer need skilled care have been accounted for.

The discussions also highlighted ongoing challenges in finding appropriate placements for residents, particularly due to a shortage of available beds in San Francisco. The facility's leadership emphasized their commitment to ensuring that no resident is discharged without a safe and suitable destination, despite the complexities involved in the discharge process.

In addition to the recertification efforts, the Laguna Honda Joint Conference Committee reported on initiatives aimed at improving behavioral health services for residents with complex needs. This includes the establishment of specialized units and increased use of therapeutic interventions, such as pet robots for residents with dementia.
