San Franciscans for Sports and Recreation to resurface historic tennis courts at Hunters Point

San Francisco is set to revitalize its historic tennis courts at Hunters Point, following a recent city council meeting where two significant resolutions were approved. The council authorized a construction license agreement with San Franciscans for Sport and Recreation to resurface the courts located at 195 Kiska Road, with work scheduled to commence in November 2023 and conclude by May 2024. This initiative aims to enhance recreational facilities in the area, which have not been updated since their last resurfacing in 1987.

In a related decision, the council also approved a five-year license agreement with Youth Tennis Advantage (YTA) to provide access to tennis lessons and courts, prioritizing local youth from the Hunters Point community. This partnership is expected to foster engagement and skill development among young residents, continuing the legacy of tennis champion Arthur Ashe, who was instrumental in promoting youth tennis programs in the area.

Seth Sokolow, the volunteer executive director of San Franciscans for Sport and Recreation, emphasized the historical significance of the courts and the impact of Ashe's contributions to youth tennis. He noted that thousands of children have benefited from programs at YTA, many of whom have gone on to attend prestigious colleges.

Mike Skinner, executive director of YTA, expressed excitement about the project, highlighting that resurfacing work has already begun and is expected to be completed within the year. This revitalization not only honors Ashe's legacy but also aims to provide a safe and improved environment for the next generation of tennis players in Hunters Point.
