Clean Power SF presents new energy programs to San Francisco commissioners

The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) recently held a meeting where key updates on the Clean Power SF program were presented, highlighting significant initiatives aimed at enhancing energy efficiency and sustainability for residents and businesses in the city.

Executive Director Mike Himes reported a stable enrollment in the Clean Power SF program, with a remarkable 96% participation rate. Notably, over 8,000 accounts have opted for the Supergreen product, which provides 100% renewable energy sourced from new projects. This reflects a growing commitment to renewable energy among San Francisco residents and businesses.

The meeting also introduced several upcoming programs designed to support energy conservation and reduce emissions. Julia Allman, manager of customer solutions for Clean Power SF, detailed initiatives such as the Low-Income Solar Inverter Replacement Program, which aims to assist low-income households in maintaining their solar energy systems. This program, set to launch on December 1, will provide up to $3,000 in rebates for necessary repairs or replacements.

Another significant initiative discussed was the Heat Pump Water Heater Incentive Program, which focuses on training contractors to install high-efficiency electric water heaters. This program is part of a regional effort to electrify heating systems and reduce reliance on natural gas. The program is expected to launch early next year, with incentives totaling up to $3,000 per installation.

Additionally, the Food Service Energy Efficiency Program aims to provide free energy audits and discounted improvements for food sector businesses, addressing the unique challenges faced by this industry, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. This program is currently awaiting approval from the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) and is anticipated to launch in spring 2023.

The meeting underscored the importance of collaboration among local agencies, with BayREN (Bay Area Regional Energy Network) also playing a crucial role in funding and implementing energy efficiency programs. Lowell Chu from the Department of the Environment highlighted the various BayREN initiatives that provide financial support and technical assistance to local businesses and multifamily properties.

Commissioners expressed appreciation for the updates and emphasized the need for continued outreach to ensure that these programs effectively reach and benefit the community. The discussions reflected a strong commitment to advancing San Francisco's energy goals and supporting residents in their transition to more sustainable energy practices.
