Community advocates push to preserve Shipwrights Cottage in India Basin redevelopment plan

In a recent government meeting, community members voiced strong support for the preservation of the Shipwrights Cottage, a historic building located at 900 Ennis Avenue in the India Basin neighborhood of San Francisco. The discussions highlighted the importance of maintaining the site's legacy, particularly its connection to the maritime industry and the skilled craftsmanship of shipbuilding that once thrived in the area.

A local resident, who has lived in India Basin for over a decade, emphasized the significance of the Shipwrights Cottage as a symbol of the neighborhood's rich history. The resident urged city commissioners to designate the building as a space for education and remembrance, arguing that any alternative use would diminish the historical value of the site. The cottage, which was previously recognized as a historic landmark, served as a hub for the wooden boat industry, particularly the scouse schooner, for more than a century.

Jackie Flynn, executive director of the A Philip Randolph Institute, also spoke in favor of the cottage's preservation. She highlighted the ongoing development of the India Basin Shoreline Park, which aims to address historical inequities in the Bayview-Hunters Point area. Flynn noted that the Shipwrights Cottage could serve as a welcoming center that educates visitors about the area's boat-building heritage while fostering community engagement.

Alejandra Chiesa, area program director with the Trust for Public Land, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in the project's design.
