Fire Department adopts direct radio channels to improve communication issues

San Francisco's fire department has taken significant steps to improve communication during emergency responses following challenges with a new digital radio system. During a recent government meeting, officials discussed the transition from an analog to a digital radio system that began in September. This change led to difficulties in communication on the fire ground, particularly with repeated tactical channels that hindered effective coordination.

Chief Cannon highlighted the need for enhanced radio training and communication strategies, noting that issues had persisted despite efforts to resolve them. In collaboration with Motorola, the department identified that the repeated channels were not optimal for clear communication during emergencies. As a result, a plan was developed to switch back to direct tactical channels, which are expected to provide more reliable communication.

This new system was implemented on Monday, July 7, 2025, at 8 AM, and officials are optimistic that it will significantly improve communication for all fireground incidents moving forward. The department is committed to ensuring that firefighters can effectively communicate during emergencies, ultimately enhancing public safety in San Francisco.
