San Francisco advocates push for affordable Internet access for seniors and disabled residents

During a recent San Francisco County government meeting, community members voiced urgent concerns about digital access, particularly for seniors and individuals with disabilities. The discussions highlighted the critical need for reliable and affordable internet services, especially in the wake of the pandemic, which has underscored the importance of online connectivity for essential services.

Kathy Lipscomb, a representative from Senior and Disability Action, emphasized that internet access is no longer a luxury but a necessity for daily living. She pointed out that many low-income residents, particularly seniors, rely on the internet for healthcare, social connections, and financial management. Lipscomb urged the government to ensure that major internet service providers like AT&T, Comcast, and Verizon fulfill their responsibility to provide equitable access.

Andrew Broderick from the San Francisco Council echoed these sentiments, noting that digital exclusion remains a significant barrier for many residents. He highlighted that one in four older residents in the city are either seniors or people with disabilities, many of whom face economic challenges. Broderick called for affordable internet services and better infrastructure to support independent living and community engagement.

Jessica Layman, the executive director of Senior and Disability Action, shared her personal experience of relying on home attendants and the challenges posed by a lack of reliable services. She criticized private internet providers for their resistance to citywide free Wi-Fi initiatives and called for them to contribute to affordable internet solutions, particularly for vulnerable populations.

The meeting underscored a growing consensus among community leaders that addressing the digital divide is essential for fostering inclusivity and ensuring that all residents can participate fully in society. As discussions continue, the focus remains on collaboration between government, non-profits, and private sectors to enhance digital access for all San Francisco residents.
