Zellwegers enhance DuBose Park Historic District home with authentic repairs and improvements

The City of San Francisco held a meeting on July 4, 2025, focusing on the preservation and renovation efforts of a historic property within the DuBose Park Historic District. The discussion highlighted the significant character-defining features of the property, including its overall form, scale, and architectural details such as double-hung wood windows, painted horizontal wood siding, bay windows, gable roofs, decorative cornices, ornamental shingles, and spindle work.

Michelle, a key speaker at the meeting, noted the extensive work completed by the property owners, the Zellwegers, on their historic home. The renovations included repairs to the wrought iron metal work over the front porch, the newel post, and the replacement of the wrought iron work along the stairs. Additionally, the wood stairs were replaced to match the original design.

The meeting also addressed the condition of the metal work at the porch, which required only minor repairs and repainting. However, the decorative metal at the stairs was deemed in poor condition and was replaced in kind. Visual aids presented during the meeting showcased the completed work, including a close-up of the newly replaced stairs.

Further improvements included the installation of a concrete pad under the stairs for trash and recycling bin storage, as well as a new compatible roof with skylights. However, planning officials advised the Zellwegers that two skylights located closest to the street were too visible and should be removed. The Zellwegers agreed to this recommendation, which will necessitate patching and repairing the roof.
