Polk Street NCD approves Small Liquor Store at Soda Popinski Bar Location

The San Francisco Planning Commission convened to discuss a proposal for a conditional use authorization to establish a small accessory liquor store at Soda Popinski, located at 1548 California Street. The proposed store would occupy approximately 150 square feet within an existing bar and aims to operate alongside the current bar services. The project is designed to serve the local community during permissible hours without expanding the building or altering its facade.

The proposal has garnered support from four neighboring residents, and the planning department has deemed it consistent with the city’s general plan, recommending approval. The store intends to focus on local craft spirits and beers, promoting products from San Francisco and California micro distilleries. The project sponsor, Ben Bridal, emphasized the store's limited size and scope, assuring that it would not sell single beers or airline bottles, and would not feature a takeout window.

Bridal, who has a history of operating successful bars in the city, highlighted the challenges faced by local businesses due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He expressed a desire to revitalize the area and support local brands through this new venture. The store would also facilitate the continuation of virtual cocktail classes that were popular during the pandemic, although current regulations limit alcohol sales without food.

Public comments during the meeting raised concerns about the potential impact of the new liquor store on neighborhood safety and existing businesses. Residents voiced worries about increased noise and disturbances from bar patrons, as well as the competition it might pose to nearby family-owned grocery stores that also sell liquor.

The commission will consider these discussions and public feedback before making a final decision on the proposal, which aims to breathe new life into a struggling area while promoting local products.
