The San Francisco Department of Public Health (DPH) recently highlighted significant advancements in equity training and hiring processes during a government meeting. The discussion focused on the implementation of mandatory equity learning requirements for all DPH employees, which includes at least four hours of training documented in performance appraisals. This initiative aims to enhance equity within teams and improve interactions with clients and patients.
As of now, over 4,700 employees have completed the online module "Introduction to Health Equity," with additional training on topics such as orientation and gender identity, cultural humility, and bias. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted traditional face-to-face interactions and reliance on paper processes, the DPH successfully transitioned many operations to digital platforms like DocuSign. This shift allowed for the continuation of hiring, resulting in over 1,000 new hires during the pandemic.
The meeting also addressed the development of a Racial Equity Plan, which was submitted to the Office of Health Equity last November. This plan emphasizes the importance of collaboration across various city departments to ensure alignment and effectiveness in hiring practices. Additionally, the DPH acknowledged the need for improved data collection and analysis to better inform their equity initiatives.
Overall, the meeting underscored the DPH's commitment to advancing equity and adapting to new challenges, while also recognizing the importance of data-driven decision-making in achieving these goals.
