SFUSD Parent Advisory Council addresses student safety concerns at Lowell High School

The San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) Parent Advisory Council (PAC) meeting on December 2 highlighted urgent concerns regarding student safety and the handling of sexual assault cases within schools. The meeting, which was open to the public and conducted via Zoom, featured a presentation from Sam Bass, the director of the SFUSD art department, but it was the public comments that captured the most attention.

Students voiced their frustrations over the administration's perceived inaction on sexual harassment and assault cases. Aliyah Hunter, a Lowell High School student, expressed her discomfort and lack of safety at school, urging the administration to take decisive action against abusers. "Students should feel safe in the classroom," she stated, emphasizing the need for a supportive environment free from harassment.

Former PAC chair Naomi Laguana echoed these sentiments, calling for increased support for students and urging others to join the PAC to help address these pressing issues. She noted that the problem of harassment has become an epidemic, affecting students across the district.

Current students, including Sherry and Justine, reiterated the need for transparency and clarity regarding the legal processes involved in reporting sexual assault. They criticized the administration for not adequately addressing these incidents and for failing to implement necessary educational programs on consent and sexual health.

The meeting concluded with a call for action, as students demanded that their voices be heard and that the administration take immediate steps to ensure their safety. The PAC encouraged community involvement, inviting anyone interested to attend future meetings and participate in discussions aimed at improving student welfare. The next PAC meeting is scheduled for January, where these critical issues are expected to remain at the forefront of the agenda.
