San Francisco considers amendment to extend first year free business program

The San Francisco County government is considering an important amendment that would extend the "First Year Free" program for small businesses through June 30, 2025. This initiative, which began in November 2021, has already enrolled over 6,500 small businesses and waived nearly $3 million in fees, providing significant financial relief to new enterprises in the city.

The "First Year Free" program covers various initial costs for qualifying businesses, including registration fees, license fees, and permits. To be eligible, a business must have gross receipts of $5 million or less and operate from a registered commercial location, excluding home-based businesses and short-term rentals. The enrollment process is seamless; businesses are automatically enrolled when they register or add a new location, eliminating any additional steps.

The program has proven to be a vital support system for small businesses, particularly during challenging economic times. The data presented at the meeting highlighted that the Department of Building Inspection (DBI) fees accounted for the largest portion of the waived costs, followed by fees collected by the Treasurer and Tax Collector.
